This Creative Images was made from a photo of the map of the Crevices that hung in the Cliff House lobby for many years. The original map was draw by A. Fletcher Smiley during his engineering days and is a wonderful example of his talents. Mr Smiley studied engineering and draftsmanship when this was an incredible effort: first gathering the information, then painstakingly drawing the map. I explored the crevices for many years and found his map accurate and enlightening -- a larger man than me, he must have had a difficult time gettinginto many of the small rooms and passageways that he depicts.

This is only a portion of the map -- unfortunately, it was one of the things stolen from the hotel and the pictures that I have are only of one portion (the less popular section) of the Crevices. Hopefully we will find the rest of the pictures as we explore the Phillips Archeives over the next few years.

By the way, the rock in the lower left side of the map is easily found if you follow the old Minnewaska/Mohonk hiking trail past the Crevices. This is a good starting point if you wish to explore or visit the spots depicted in this map.
