Lake Minnewaska and surrounding areas as they are now.

This is horrendous news. I used to have a Family Day picnic at the lake each year when I was in college. I'm so sad that our government has only their own best interests in mind. Their selfishness is destroying every bit of untouched nature we have left.

If leeches are not bad enough ? The park management and their gustopo clown cops make visiting the lake very unpleasant. Then you go to the distance swim club and you are confronted by vicious xews, who have virtually created a xews only country club. Are these the leaches you are referring to ?

This is the first time I have heard about the leeches too. I used to enjoy Minnewaska in the late 70's and we were able to navigate the trails on our own and enjoy the crystal clear lake, the falls, and especially Lake Mohonk. I was so angry and disappointed when visiting there yesterday to show my niece and nephews the beautiful part of New York State and for me to revisit the place I enjoyed but not visited in about 15 years. First of all, $55.00 for a one day family pass, a hike up the mountain to Lake Mohonk, only to be informed that we would not have lake access and the extra amenities were extra! For example, $15.00 for a half hour of paddle boating! This is a outrageous, a disgrace to the community, especially to the people who are local, who have enjoyed this area a child and young adult, who saw the high falls, low falls, and beach become crowded and dirty, who could no longer enjoy a hike without loud mouthed, rude visitors ruining the chance to enjoy nature as it should be. I agree, where are you Maurice Hinchey and all the others who should clean it up, make the Smiley family open it up to the local population or give back to the community by contributing to the clean-up effort or something! How greedy and selfish of this family to cater to visitors and not the community who supports them and who also pay taxes! Money never used to be of so much importance in the community either!

I was up at Lake Minnewaska yesterday. No leeches! Water was clear and refreshing. Had a blast.

Hey Jeff, as a kid I learned to swim at minnewaska around 78'. We would go there every summer swim, take the canoes out , and ride the horses. I went there last year and saw that the emerald color was turned brown. I thought it was a natural accumulation of setiment. Finding that it's a contamination caused by NY state is not surprising but very saddening. It's a true example of the continuing destruction of everything great that gets destroyed by government.

Hey eyes worth. I like the sound of that. I was there last summer, and everything seemed o.k. It's a little worrying reading some of the other reports. I will be visiting the lake in a couple of weeks

I worked at Lake Minnewaska in the summer of 1968. The decline was evident then, but it was one of the best summers of my life. First time away from home - remember swimming in the lake after work and small water snakes would rub up against my legs. I just remember that so vividly.

I have not been to the area for a decade. I'll be taking my kids there next week...hoping the place looks magical. Real bummer on the leeches though. That lake as well as Awosting were just sooooo refreshing!

I worked at the Minnewaska Mountain house in the mid-late '70s in the dining room. I have many fond memories of the hotel and it's grounds. One of the things we, as employees, would brag about was the Naturally pristine lake below. My heart is broken that the state of NY has destroyed that natural wonder. AND that they are not rectifying it.

I'm a systems ecologist, and suggest that (while pollution might be involved) Lake Minnewaska probably has an unbalanced ecosystem. Maybe too few, or the wrong kind of, fish. For instance Red Eared Sunfish are particularly voracious feeders on leeches, some turtles, "Puddle" ducks, etc.
