Yes K, I live in a remote village of mennewaska. Here snake is not very uncommon creature. Couple of months ago when I was returning from my friend’s house in the dark I mistakenly stepped over a snake & almost get bitten by it. Thank god I was wearing my army boots. These boots are specially design for rough terrain. So if you are coming to visit mennewaska, then don't forget to bring those boots & antivenom for protection from snake.

I also live very near the park. In the seven years I've been hiking here I've run into a couple large black snakes and one copperhead. I expected much more.

First of u dont even know how to spell "Minnewaska"? whats with that? ist on the page!!!!! And secondly of course there are snakes here! and as for the copperhead, there arent to many of them in that area... however there are many in the hudson highlands..Timber rattlers are in the area, along with rat snakes ( probably the black ones u are talking about) or if it was in a tree then a black racer, but there are tons of species in this area... are you guys like 10 years old or something???

Black Snakes - Look up!

Postby I agree - don't judge! » Sat Jan 13, 2007 11:13 am

I have photos of large Black Snakes mating in the trees not far from the trail to Awosting. They are not supposed to get larger than 6 feet, but these are at least 8 or more and are a good four inches thick. I photographed them from about 25 feet away and have about a dozen digital images.

If possible could you post those pictures. I'd love to see them. Joe...

Yes Joe, I could post them, but how do you post an image here? The size of each photo is 15 meg. and they won't up-load at that size, so I would need to lower their resolution in order to post them. Doing this makes them impossible to Zoom into, to see detail and their size in relation to their surroundings. It becomes pointless. I will up-load one (I have 10 images).

Are you local? If so, I could get you a CD of the full images.

My experience in the park is what I've listed above. My experience in my yard is far different.....

I live 3 miles east of the main park entrance right on 44-55. I have copperheads, black racers and garter snakes on the property regularly. On occasion I get a rattler around firewood that sits under a thick canopy of very tall hardwoods, ready made habitat. If you want to find rattlers check the caves/overhangs off the left side of clove road, north of 44-55 on a hot, sunny, summer day.

I hike in the park fairly regularly since I live so close. It's not uncommon for my girlfriend and I to put 24+ miles per week on our boots in Minnewaska, all year around. My experience is only a few snakes in seven years of regular hiking.

Your a lucky man to live so close to the park. What a beautiful area you live in. Thirty some odd years ago when I first stumbled "and I mean that literally" across the New Paltz area I fell in love with the place. Back then property was cheap and I was always going to buy some but never did. When I look at the price of land up there now,it's out of my reach. In all my years of hiking Minnewaska I've only seen two snakes. Both times I had gotten way off the beaten path.

snakes

I never saw a snake within the Minnewaska area but I did see several rattlers and a copperhead in other areas of lower NY state and the tri-state area years ago when I was an avid hiker in the area. I almost stepped on a rattler on the Catskill Mtn. Trail; I was lucky there!

Joe, you are correct about real estate values. Years ago when I first discovered New Paltz, Kerhonkson (spelling?), Ellenville, etc...I fell madly in love with the beauty. Shoulduv, coulduv, woulduv...I regret that I did not have half a brain back in my younger years...if I did I would have bought property up there. Out here in Colorado property values have soared...I cannot afford to buy my house now! This nation's going to end up with the very poor and the very rich...and nothing inbetween.

I completely agree, in fact, I doubt I could buy my place again at today's prices. The value of my house has doubled in seven years.

I have seen several water snakes in Lake Minnewaska while swiming both at the public roped swimming area and the swimmers assiciation areas. I have been at Minnewaska swimming for two decades but did not notice water snakes til recently. Anybody have any info. I wish I was not put off by them because it keeps me from swimming there. If I knew more about their habits (like what time of day I am least likely to encounter them) it might help me cope.
