we used to hang out at the Thesis, P and G's, the Homestead in 1973, 74, 75. I lived in Crispell hall on Campus and the Womblers used to play at parties in the dorm. they were amazing. they did covers of Poco, The Band, as well as great originals. we were all waiting till they got famous. But alas they faded away. I would love to hear them again if anyone has recordings.

I remember New Paltz in the 1970s. I remember the Womblers. My then boyfriend John Runge was a talented guitarist & was with many different bands & personnel. They kept changing the names of the bands. He played at The Homestead, The Thesis, Saint Blaise, The Well (in Rosendale) The Joyous Lake (in Woodstock) to name a few.

John Runge & I did a lot of hiking around Minnewaska back then. John gave me some great recordings of his band performing at The Homestead. They were recorded on one of his prize possessions, a state-of-the-art 4 track "TEAC" Reel-To-Reel portable tape recorder. His other prize possession was his Gibson Les Paul. Other recordings were made at Hunter House in Hunter, NY. & Joyous Lake in Woodstock. I was there for those performances too. I was there at The Homestead dancing that night. early to mid 70s. After some yrs those tapes were transferred to compact tape cassettes. Eventually he transferred them to CDs.

I went to UCCC and lived in New Paltz. Played Soccer and basketball and partied at all the
hot spots. Joe's East West and a few other places. Great times. Beautiful area.

Well sad to say the town is quite a different place these days. All fluff and no soul. And certainly no sign of the nightly, spirited and often joyous music we all remember about the place. Amalgamated in that predictable pseudo-hippie way. Throw in the crumbling and boarded-up "downtown" and a campus full of radicalized yet totally uncurious automatons, and what you have is a pathetic aesthetic. You can't go home again my friends.

New Paltz 1970 - 1976. This is the only place/time that it ever occurs to me that I would like to go back to in a time machine. I don't recall being friends with any local stars except for perhaps "Denise, the demented dancer" - primarily P&Gs.
I remember taking a 1 credit course (probably 1976), Friday afternoons, "Thoreau and Hiking the Gunks" -- not sure we ever discussed Thoreau, just tromped around, learning some new access points. Now recalling The Byrds playing out in the Tripping Fields.
Visited to see Toots and the Maytals oiut there. Also got run out of town by the local police in 1978 -- a bunch of us stopped of after a weekend at "the campsite" up by Ashokan; wandered around inside the old abandoned mine (where the heck was that?). Anyway, the police escorted us to the Thruway -- unlikely these days -- sending a wasted bunch out on the Thruway - Exit 18 (I should have an Exit 18 T-shirt).

If you remember new polls in the 70s you weren’t really there!

A very sad scene these days. Dark, stressed and foreboding. Like a twilight zone episode. Nothing like the lighthearted, free-flowing and unperturbed vibe of the early 70s. It has become a parody of the "college town", and like the rest of Amerika, there's a depressing strip-mall sameness to it, wrapped in a thin veil of faux vitality. If you are already depressed, skip the visit.

Don't know how I wound up on this thread --but heh, I remember John Runge, great player. I remember watching him play in St. Blaise one night with The Kids, can't remember who else was in the band, maybe Little Stevie on bass? Or Mike Dunn.. Oh Yeah, Paul Brannin (don't think I'm remembering that last name right --he played guitar and sax --lived next door to him in a place out in Modena, a place called Maple Villa, '73ish then saw him many years later playing in some version of Orleans in Washington Park, Albany) Anyway, back to John --great player. It was a low-key, weekday night...kind of slow, not too many people in the club so I had an unrestricted view (no dancers) The tune that I recall them playing is "One More Silver Dollar". Drums, don't remember maybe Randy Ciarlante?

OMG crazy fun. Lower legal drinking age in 1976. Best memory as a 16 yr old has to be trying to figure out the best way to get in with my friends. Once in, we had it made! Those days we went from bar to bar walking EVERYWHERE. Does any one remember the little hole in the wall bar next to the Texaco gas station? Our class of 1977 frequented this place whenever we could go out .
