I am assuming that Minnewaska is now open since the fire has been contained for nearly a week? The main page says that the park is still closed.
Also, was Sam's Point ever closed? I imagine it would have been since you can theoretically get to Minnewaska from there. When I first heard about the fire the day after it started, I took a drive up and around the mountains and wound up in Cragsmoor, thinking I might be able to get into Sam's Point just to get to the top and see what was going on. At that point, I didn't know any details other than someone telling me that the "Ridge is on fire from the Ice Caves to Minnewaska." I knew as I got closer that the fire was no where near Sam's Point. But by the time i got to SP, it was near sunset and the gate was up.
One more thing...the ranger hut that was destroyed. I imagine this was one of the cabins near Lake Awosting?
Minnewaska Open?
Re: Minnewaska Open?
Should've researched before posting!!
Fire at Minnewaska declared over
CRAGSMOOR — The Overlook Fire at Minnewaska State Park was declared extinguished this afternoon, though there are some eastern sections of the park that will remain closed to the public.
The state Office of Parks & Recreation reported the news today, after the blaze consumed 3,100 acres of the park over a period of about two weeks.
Battling the fire was a lengthy 24-hour effort on the part of 134 state and local agencies, and ended after 2.75 inches of rain fell on the park in 24 hours, the state office reported.
Most of the park is open, but there are some areas of the park that have been damaged to the point of posing potential hazards to the public. Areas that will remain closed are the following:
Jenny Lane Foot path, which is a section of the Long Path; Mossy Glenn Footpath; Lower Awosting Carriageway; Smiley Carriageway; Stony Kill Carriageway; and the Stony Kill Falls area.

Re: Minnewaska Open?
A friend and I hiked over to Lake Awosting from Minnewaska yesterday. In answer to the question about what cabin was burned in the fire - it was not either of the two near Awosting. The fire did come right up to the corner where the Lower Awosting Road intersects the road around the lake but did not get as far as the cabin. The vegetation on the lake side of the road is still green and on the other side every thing is black. It was very sad to see.
