copperhead snakes

On may 25th I saw 2 copperheads mateing by Coxingkill (split rock) they were in a high traveled area by the bridge so hikers, bikers, and walkers keep myour eyes open when entering areas of sun and rock. Enjoy

One time long ago while hiking at Minnewaska, I heard an unusual sound. I thought it was a very loud cicada because it was that time of year, that kind of summer day. As I walked closer, I saw a coiled Rattler on a flat rock about 6 feet from the trail. My small dog had scouted ahead of me as he always did, and he set off the snake. I walked on quickly, made sure my dog stayed at a safe distance. Then I crept back cautiously to take another look, not quite so close. By then he was done shaking his booty. It was a thrill to see a Rattler.

Later we returned on the same trail. When we approached the snake's neighborhood, I carried my dog most of the way back to the car. This time I was thrilled not to see him.

More recently I saw a very long thin black snake slowly climbing up a pine tree. It was beside a trail to Millbrook Mountain, where it crosses a stream. It used to be called "Over and Under" trail. I wasn't at all alarmed by this snake. I took several photos. I watched for a while, fascinated at how he clung to the rough bark with harldy any "foothold". Who needs footholds when you're a snake!
